Russell Shelton Sr., 73, of Monticello, Indiana, died at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023, at his residence, surround by his family.
Russell was born on Jan. 6, 1950, in Albany, Kentucky, to James and Ammajean (Moles) Shelton. They both preceded.
On Feb. 24, 1970, in Pike Creek Church of the Brethren, in rural Monticello, Indiana, he married Carol Medley; she survives. They remarried on their 25th and 50th Anniversaries.
Russell was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Vietnam War, serving on a hospital ship for his first tour of duty, he then volunteering for a second tour as a U.S. Marine. Russell was the recipient of two Bronze Stars. Retired after 21 years of service as an Indiana Army National Guard. He then went to work for Globe Valve in Delphi, Indiana for several years. Russell trimmed trees for the rest of his life, working for LMU (Logansport Municiple Utilities), retiring in 2015. He was a member of Monticello and Logansport VFW, and served as a district commander four different times. Russell also belonged to the Monticello American Legion, AmVets, Redmens and the Navy Club of Lafayette, Indiana. He was an avid whiskey drinker, and loved his family and dogs when he got home. Russell enjoyed cutting wood and riding his motorcycle.
Russell is survived by his wife, Carol Shelton of Monticello, Indiana; son, Russell (wife Dana) Shelton, Jr. of Delphi, Indiana; daughters, Sheila Scott of Monticello, Indiana, and Veronica Akers of Monticello, Indiana; grandchildren, Aaron Shelton, Austin (wife Cobra) Shelton, Kurtis Bowsher, and Kayla (CJ White) Bowsher, Samantha (husband Jess'c) Campbell, Nichole (husband Aaron) Tucker, Hannah (Adam Carpenter) Scott, and Devin Scott, Ashley (Travis Foulks) Akers and Eric Akers, Jr; and great-grandchildren, Serenity Akers, Emmorie Akers, Kaylee Foulks, Nolan Shelton, Novah Forkeotes, Oakley White and Paizlee Foulks; siblings, Faye (husband John) Funk, Bonnie Wright, Brenda Wireman, Jesse (wife Cathy) Shelton, Dennis Shelton, and Terry (wife Kristie) Shelton, sisters-in-law, Darlene Bolin and Donna Watts; brothers-in-law, Eddie (wife Vicki) Medley, and Robert Medley Jr.; several nieces; nephews; great-nieces, great-nephews; cousins; and friends.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ammajean (Moles) Shelton; daughter, Jagett Marie Shelton; brother, Samual Shelton; son-in-law, Eric P. Akers Sr.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023, and from 11 a.m. to noon on Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, at the Miller-Roscka Funeral Home of Monticello, Indiana.
A celebration of life service will be at noon on Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, at the Miller-Roscka Funeral Home of Monticello, Indiana, with Pastor Donald Harmon of the Yeoman United Methodist Church of Yeoman, Indiana.
Burial will follow in the Yeoman Cemetery; by special request, Russell will be taken to his final resting place on the back of an LMU truck, and full military rites will be conducted by the Monticello Veterans Honor Guard.
Memorial donations may be given to Wounded Warriors Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home, or can be mailed to 6368 E. U.S. 24, Monticello, Indiana 47960 c/o Shelton Family.
