Norman C. Been, 96, of Rockfield, died July 31, 2021. He had battled melanoma for three years.

He was born on July 10, 1925, to Jesse Y. and Lura (Roberts) Been, of rural Burrows.

He attended Rockfield High School, and on March 1943, he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed on the Samoan Islands in Communication.

On Nov. 19, 1945, he married his high school sweetheart, Marjorie Deel, in Hayward, California, where he was stationed.

His entire career was with the railroad, starting as an agent with the Wabash RR, then it became the Norfolk & Western and finally retiring from the Norfolk and Southern RR.

On Sept. 8, 2013, he was thrilled to be included with other WWII veterans to fly to Washington DC as part of Lafayette's Honor Flight.

He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him, especially his children, Molly (Cary) Cline, Marilou White, Cathy (Don) Timmons and David (Sherri) Been, all local; and his grandchildren, Tad White, New Albany, Mia Cline, Lafayette, Adam (Belkys) Cline, West Lafayette, Nathan (Katie) Martin, Pahrump, Nevada, Amanda Been, Key West, Florida, Libby Been, Lafayette, and Brandon Been, Delphi. Also surviving are 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years; his parents; five sisters; and one granddaughter.

Viewing will be at Davidson Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2021. Pastor Jerry Long will officiate. Military Gravesite Rites by the Carroll County Honor Guard. Burial will be in Rockfield Cemetery.
