Esther Elaine Pokorney
Esther Elaine Pokorney, 68, of West Lafayette, passed away on Friday, Sept. 6, 2019. She was born on March 3, 1951 in Gary to the late Robert Lee and Joan Ida (Ginter) Havrilesko.
Esther was created by God with many gifts and talents, and a love of learning. She was a daring and brave soul with a brilliant mind and earned an Associate's Degree in Paralegal and Computer Technology. She was a seamstress and crafter, creating many projects for neighbors, strangers, and especially making costumes for herself and her family of all ages that wore her masterpieces proudly. She was known for her excellent cooking and the joy it brought her to feed others until their bellies were full and their hearts were happy. Upon Esther's many accomplishments and joys in life, her absolute favorite joy was being a mother and a caretaker.
Above all, Esther was a carrier of God's love, creativity, strength, and courage. Her life is a testimony to God's grace and faithfulness. Just as Jesus has taught us to love, Esther loved to love the forgotten ones and the ones with no shelter, food, or hope. Esther wrote a journal entry that stated, "Jesus was her best friend, and she was grateful for His unconditional love, loving her exactly as she is." She is in heaven now, and those who know Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior will see her again.
Surviving are her children, Micah Pokorney of St. Louis; Kelly (Mark) Hendricks of Murrieta, California; and John (Kimberly) Pokorney of Portage and her siblings, Bobbi (Tom) Tierney of Logansport, Joy (Butch) Fahler of Monticello, Chris (Judy) Havrilesko of Logansport, and Doug (Cheryl) Havrilesko of Winchester, Kentucky.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Marcia Obenland.
Esther's family will be holding a private gathering to celebrate her life. You may leave condolences and warm memories of Esther online at
