Donald E. "Don" Heiny, 90, of Burnettsville, passed away at 10:50 a.m., Friday, August 3, 2018, at the Indiana University Health, Arnett Hospital of Lafayette.
He was born on Sunday, March 4, 1928, in Lake Cicott to the late Clint and Minnie (Girard) Heiny. On March 19, 1951, in Logansport he married Gloria A. Cross; she passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2017.
Don had lived in White and Cass County all his life and was a 1946 graduate of Burnettsville High School of Burnettsville.
He and his late wife, Gloria, owned and operated the former Heiny Grocery Store of Burnettsville for over thirty years.
Don had also owned and operated grocery stores in Logansport, Headlee, and Camden.
He was in the grocery store business for over fifty years.
Don was very well known for the amazing ham salad he used to make at the grocery stores and no one has ever been able to match or make it.
He attended the Burnettsville Church of the Brethren of Burnettsville.
Don was a United States Korean Conflict Army Veteran.
He had served on the Board of School Trustees of the Pioneer Regional School Corporation and the State Bank of Burnettsville Board of Trustees of Burnettsville.
Surviving are daughters, Carol (husband Kurt) Shafer, Cindy (husband Dick) Suiter, and Chris (husband Mark) Heiny, all of Burnettsville; six grandchildren, Michelle Darden of Logansport, Megan (husband JT) Veach of Lafayette, Casey Wilson of Logansport, Brandon (companion Jennifer) Suiter, Kevin Heiny, and Kim Heiny, all of Burnettsville; eleven grandchildren; sister, Doris (husband Richard) McLeland of Delphi; brothers-in-law, Larry (wife Lynn) McLeland, and Jerry (wife Faith) McLeland, both of Burnettsville; sister-in-law, Jan Nolte of Logansport; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces, great great nephew, cousins, and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Clint and Minnie (Girard) Heiny; wife, Gloria A. (Cross) Heiny; and son, Craig Heiny.
Visitation will be from 12:00 (noon) to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at the Miller - Roscka Funeral Home of Monticello. Full Military Rites by the Monticello Veterans Honor Guard of Monticello will be at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at the funeral home followed by Celebration of Life Service with Rev. Dawn Wild of the Burnettsville Church of the Brethren of Burnettsville officiating.
Burial will follow at the Davis Cemetery in rural Burnettsville (Cass County).
Memorial may be given to the Burnettsville Community Board or to the Burnettsville Church of the Brethren, both of Burnettsville. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
