Medicine Lodge, KS - Medicine Lodge — Beverly Kay Garten, 79, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2026, at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital.

She was born on Dec. 17, 1946, in Logansport, Indiana, to Herbert Gene and Shirley Jean (Pugsley) Rice. Bev married Steve Garten on Oct. 17, 1995. They were married for 30 years.

Bev graduated from Logansport High School in 1965. She worked as a civil servant for the USAF and was an office manager for the Maydew and Thibault Optometry and Kempton Chiropractic. She was a member of First Christian Church, the Quilt Guild, ESA Sorority and the Heritage Center. She enjoyed painting and crafting, quilting, reading, playing bingo, doing online puzzles, playing crosswords, baking for church activities, going to the beach and walking on the sand, collecting sea shells, seeing the grandchildren and playing video games with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Steve Garten; children, Mike (Tina) Brown of Wichita, Kansas and Julie (Jeramie) Dobbins of San Diego, California; step-sons, Justin (Catherine) Garten of Los Angeles, California and Matthew (Yuna) Garten of Kirkland, Washington; brother, Craig (Dayle Ann) Rice, Indiana; grandchildren, Kayla Riley, Andrew Shepherd, Kristin Brown, Katelynn Brown, Danielle Brown, Greyson Dobbins, Landon Dobbins, Brandon Garten and Evan Garten; and four great-grandchildren.

Bev is preceded in death by her father, Herbert Gene Rice; mother, Shirley Jean Rice; sister, Phyllis Ann Rossi.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date at the First Christian Church in Medicine Lodge.
