Greenwood, IN - Bernhard George "Bernie" Ulfers, 83, of Greenwood, Indiana, formerly of Royal Center, Indiana, passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2025, in Greenwood Meadows, following an extended illness.
Born April 16, 1942, he was the son of the late Bernhard "Ben" and Helen L. (Kistler) Ulfers.
Following graduation from Royal Center High School, Bernie earned his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University, continuing on to earn his master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Florida. Bernie joined OTS for the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged with the rank of lieutenant, serving at Eglin AFB.
On April 16, 1965, in the Shiloh United Church of Christ, he married his high school sweetheart, Kay S. (Eikelberner) Ulfers, who survives.
From 1969-2000, Bernie worked as a research engineer for Delco Electronics. Following his retirement, Bernie and Kay enjoyed living in the sunshine of Fort Myers, Florida. They returned to Indiana in 2021 to be close to family. He was a member of the Shiloh Christian Church.
Surviving with his wife is son, Brent (Heidi) Ulfers, daughter, Gretchen (Jason) Schwartz; grandchildren, Julian Schwartz, Elle Schwartz, Adelaide Ulfers and Victoria Ulfers; along with several extended family members and friends.
A funeral service celebrating Bernie's life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, in Fisher Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Mark Marshall officiating. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. Friday until the time of the service.
Burial will follow in the Shiloh Christian Cemetery.
