Barbara A. Helvie Obituary
Logansport, IN - Barbara A. Helvie, 90, Logansport, Indiana, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2026, at home with her family by her side.
Born February 23, 1936, in Rochester, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Edith (Reed) Fred.
In May 0f 1972, in Grace Fellowship Church, Logansport, she was married to Jack Helvie, who survives.
A proud Fulton Bulldog, Barb graduated from Grass Creek High School and carried that small‑town grit with her throughout a lifetime of hard work and heart. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, she embraced many careers over the years. She first greeted neighbors as a cashier at Garden City Supermarket in Eastgate, then served up smiles as a waitress at Harvey's Drive‑In on the West Side. Later, she balanced dual roles, splitting her days between Joe Herd's Insurance Agency and Kesling's Drug Store. Barb even poured her creativity into downtown Logansport, where she owned and operated her own gift shop, Family Creations.
What mattered most to Barb, though, was never a job title. It was the people she loved. Weekend "boat visits" with family were her happy place, the moments she looked forward to all week. Family was her joy and her greatest accomplishment. As the proud matriarch of a big, lively clan, she adored her grandchildren—and the many babies they blessed her with as she became a great‑grandma and eventually a great‑great‑grandma. Nothing made her smile like watching her family grow.
Surviving with her husband, Jack Helvie, of 54 years are her children, Fred (Deb) Brazzle, Mary Clem, William "Bill" Brazzle, Curt (Terri) Brazzle, Julie (Dan) Warner, and Josh (Camille) Helvie; grandchildren: Missy (Brian) Leffert, Angie Koch, Shannon (Libby) Clem, Barbie (Pat) Watkins, Jessica (Jared) Schlinglof, Kory (Jill) Brazzle, Kaila (Kenny) Hughes, Andrew Spradling, Chris (Jessica) Spradling, Nikki (Jonathan) Fisher, Aiden Helvie, Malia Helvie, Madelyn Helvie; several great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Bob Clem; and siblings, Kate Staner, Bob Fred, Howard Fred, Betty Gotshall, Judy Fred; and four great-grandbabies.
A funeral service celebrating Barb's life will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 31, 2026, in Fisher Funeral Chapel. Viewing hours will be held from 2 - 4 p.m. prior to the service.
Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery.
