Merrill Gene Neal, 83, formerly of Logansport, passed away Monday, Aug. 14, 2017, in Bohnam, Texas, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
He was born June 27, 1934, in Logansport. He graduated from Logansport High School in 1953 and went on to study engineering at Purdue University and music at Indiana University, where he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.
Merrill was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Signal Corps. Some of his passions included playing percussion with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra, the Marge Carr and Ron Barber jazz trios. His was an avid sailor on the Great Lakes and participated in the annual Port Huron to Mackinac Race.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles A. Neal and Evelyn R. Neal, and a brother, Donald C Neal. He is survived by his two children, son Thomas A. Neal and wife Kimberly; and daughter Elizabeth G. Carew and husband Jack; a grandson, Dustin Carew and wife Heather; two stepgrandchildren, Grayson and Olivia Ponsonby/Neal; and two great-grandchildren, Clyde and Chloe Carew.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
