Joseph Charles Sumpter, 76, passed away Sunday, June 25, 2017, at Bay Medical Center in Panama City Beach, Florida. Born July 1, 1940, in Logansport, he was the son of the late Joseph and Ruth Sumpter of Logansport. He lived with his family in Fort Wayne most of his life. He was the husband of Rebecca Turner Sumpter for nearly 55 years; the father of the late Shelly Sumpter (Allen) Cowen and Cindy Sumpter (Brian) Kiel and Joe (Terre) Sumpter; Papaw of Grace and BJ Cowen and Adam, Paul, Noah and Jordan Kiel.
Joe graduated from Logansport High School and received his bachelor's in mathematics from Manchester College. He earned his master's in Administration from Ball State University. Joe worked for East Allen County Schools as a math teacher and then as assistant principal at New Haven High School. He was a Shriner of the Mizpah Temple of Fort Wayne and its foot patrol. He and Becky were early Embassy Theatre volunteers, influential in saving and restoring the theatre. Joe loved music! In his retirement, he could be found disc jockeying music from all the decades. His true passion was organ music and Dixieland jazz, to which he acquired quite a collection. Joe will be remembered by his family for his generosity, love of music and ability to love life.
