John E. Gilman IV died peacefully at his home Thursday, May 25, 2017, from complications of multiple myeloma.
John was born May 25, 1942, in Schenectady, New York, the first son of John E. Gilman III of Wellesley, Massachusetts, and Mary E. (Gunn) Gilman of Albany, New York.
In 1946, the family moved to Logansport, where John was raised, graduating from Logansport High School in 1960. He graduated from Russell Sage College in Albany in 1963, and earned both bachelors and masters degrees from UCLA.
He was a lieutenant in the Air Force, serving in Thailand during the Vietnam War. He returned to Albany in the early 1970s and resided in the family homestead until his death. He retired five years ago from the New York Office of Children and Family Services where he had been a budget analyst for 30 years.
He is survived by a brother, Dennis Gilman, Cathedral City, California; a niece, Kathleen Murray, Owego, New York; her son, Justin and daughter, Hailee; a nephew, Chuck Murray, San Antonio, Texas; a cousin, Barbara B. Gilman, Chicopee, Massachusetts; and many other cousins, great nieces and nephews, many friends in Logansport and Albany friends who valued his warm companionship. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary; as well as his two sisters, Louise A. Murray and Mary E. Mercier.
John's great love was history and, since his retirement, he enjoyed immersing himself in as much history as he could get his hands on.
At John's request there will be no services, but remembrances can be made in his name to his lifelong charity, the Mater Christi Food Pantry, 40 Hopewell Ave., Albany, NY 12208.
