James L. Delaplane, 97, rural Flora, passed away Tuesday morning, Nov. 21, 2017, at his home and went to be with his Heavenly Father.
Born May 15, 1920, in Deer Creek Township, Cass County, he was the son of Worth L. and Sadie (Leedy) Delaplane.
Jim graduated from Young America High School in 1938.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II in the South Pacific as an Intelligence Specialist. He was a Staff Sergeant.
His marriage was on April 14, 1943, to Josephine "Jo" Beck, who survives.
On his return from the service, they moved to a farm in Carrollton Township, Carroll County. Jim and Jo farmed there and in Cass County until their retirement. They remained in their same home since that time, a total of 71 years.
Jim was a member of Deer Creek Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and deacon, and sang in the church choir and men's chorus.
He was a member of Camden American Legion Post 413.
Jim and Jo enjoyed traveling. In his younger years, Jim played golf and church dartball. He continued to enjoy gospel music, word puzzles, and reading.
Surviving with his wife are nieces and nephews, Vonda and Ron Downing of Vevay, Kevin Archibald of Clearwater, Florida, and Jennifer Archibald of Flora; great-nieces and nephews, Stephanie Good, Lindsay and Jason Calhoun, and Josh Downing; five great-great-nieces and nephews; several cousins; special friends, Terry and Tammy Bollenbacher; and his church family.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Beth Ann; a son, Michael James Delaplane; a sister and brother-in-law, Claribel and Jim Archibald; a nephew, John Archibald; and several cousins.
Services will be at noon Monday, Nov. 27, at the Deer Creek Presbyterian Church with Pastor Harry Roselle officiating. Burial will be in Center U.B. Cemetery, Cass County, with military rites by the Carroll County Honor Guard.
Calling hours will be two hours prior to the service Monday at the church.
Memorials in Jim's name may be made to the Deer Creek Presbyterian Church.
Cree Funeral Home, Camden, is assisting the family with arrangements.
