Evelyn Jane Werner, 87, Winamac, passed away at 5:22 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at the Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac.
She was born April 27, 1929, in Logansport, to the late Ernest and Carrie Martin Strauch of Walton. On May 29, 1949, Evelyn married Richard Eugene Werner at the St. James Lutheran Church in Logansport. He survives. Evelyn graduated from Washington Township High School in 1947. She lived with her parents on their family farm until she married. Evelyn worked at Richardson's Cleaners and at the Pharos-Tribune in Logansport following her graduation. She met her husband, Richard, at the Rural Youth Club in Logansport. Together they shared nearly 68 years. After her marriage Evelyn worked at the Pulaski County Court House until they had children. Evelyn and Richard purchased the Tony Moose farm in 1957. There they raised five children, worked and farmed. Evelyn went to work at Singer/Eaton Controls in Winamac where she was employed for 21 years until her retirement. Evelyn was a member of the St. Luke Lutheran Church in Winamac and belonged to the Ladies Guild of the church. She enjoyed helping with special church activities and vacation bible school.
Evelyn loved her family dearly and enjoyed cooking for their many holiday family dinners. She cherished time spent playing with and caring for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Evelyn also enjoyed camping and observing wildlife with her family on frequent family camping trips. Richard and Evelyn spent their retirement winter months in the Fort Myers/Bonita Springs, Florida, area for over 15 years with their snowbird friends.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Eugene Werner of Winamac; her children, Carol (Leonard) Short of Winamac, Steven (Nancy) Werner of Lafayette, Stanley Werner of Waynesboro, Virginia, Cheryl Stout of Kewanna and
Christine (Rod) Ringen of Francesville; her brothers, Norman Strauch of Logansport and Paul (Eleanor) Strauch of Kokomo; her grandchildren, Michelle (Tim) Bowyer, Lenny Short, Jacob Short, Natalie Shidler, Joe (Gena) Werner,
Andrew Werner, Kirsten Whan, Brent (Carrie) Whan, Ashley (Casey) Bradburn, Austin Risner, Jordan (Lisa) Burton, Nicole Burton and Abbriel Ringen; 28 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Carrie Martin Strauch; her in-laws, Clarence and Margaret Werner; her sisters-in-law, Arma Jean Strauch and Madolynne Werner; her brother-in-law, Robert Werner; her grandson-in-law, Jeff Shidler and her niece, Susie Strauch Cable. Services will be at 2 p.m. (EDT) Saturday, April 29, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Winamac. Burial will be in McKinley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Winamac.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. (EDT) Friday, April 28, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
